Θα πραγματοποιήσουμε ασκήσεις από το περίφημο εργαστήρι μας, “ A Day in The Life of The City- Μια μέρα στη ζωή της πόλης”, το οποίο ανέπτυξε ο Hanon Reznikov και η Judith Malina το 1990.
Διδάσκουμε το “Sound and Movement”, “Tableaux Vivants”“The Plague” (βασισμένο στο δοκίμιο του Antonin Artaud για την πανούκλα στη Μασσαλία το 1720 από το βιβλίο του “The Theatre and its Double- Το Θέατρο και το Είδωλο του”).

-Julian Beck

THEATER WORKSHOP in Athens
Sat. 12/1/2019

Free Self Organized Theater EMBROS
R.Palamidi 2 Psiri

The workshop is an invitation for participants to dive into the creation process with the Living Theater members. We will bring in exercises from our famous workshop, A Day in The Life of The City, which was developed by Hanon Reznikov and Judith Malina in 1990. It has become one of our most basic workshops in the 25 years since then, having been performed in cities, villages, and college campuses in the U.S., Europe, and South America.

We begin by teaching Living Theatre forms from our work in the 60’s and 70’s and present: “Mysteries and smaller pieces”(1964), “Paradise Now”(1969), our street theater work in the 70’s, and from our last tours across the United States and throughout Europe. We teach “Sound and Movement”“Tableaux Vivants”“The Plague”(based on Antonin Artaud’s essay on the plague in Marseilles in 1720 from his book, “The Theater and its Double”).

In this workshop, participants will be learning basic Living Theatre techniques, such as the and newly developed exercises from the latest production “Electric Awakening.” Throughout the workshop, participants will generate a collective momentum that is representative of the company’s signature style.

“To Call into question who we are to each other in the social environment of the theater, to undo the knots that lead to misery, to spread ourselves across the public’s table like platters at a banquet, to set ourselves in motion like a vortex that pulls the spectator into action, to fire the body’s secret engines, to pass through the prism and come out a rainbow, to insist that what happens in the jails matter, to cry “Not in my name!” at the hour of execution, to move from the theater to the street and from the street to the theater. This is what The Living Theatre does today. It is what it has always done.”
-Julian Beck

THE LIVING THEATER
Founded in 1947 as an imaginative alternative to the commercial theater by Judith Malina, the German-born student of Erwin Piscator, and Julian Beck, an abstract expressionist painter of the New York School, The Living Theatre has staged nearly a hundred productions performed in eight languages in 28 countries on five continents – a unique body of work that has influenced theater the world over.
In the mid-1960′s, the company began a new life as a nomadic touring ensemble. In Europe, they evolved into a collective, living and working together toward the creation of a new form of nonfictional acting based on the actor’s political and physical commitment to using the theater as a medium for furthering social change. The landmark achievements of this period include Mysteries and Smaller Pieces, Antigone, Frankenstein and Paradise Now.

The Living Theatre began to create a cycle of plays for non-traditional venues. From the prisons of Brazil to the gates of the Pittsburgh steel mills, and from the slums of Palermo to the schools of New York City, the company offered these plays, which include Six Public ActsThe Money Tower, Seven Meditations on Political Sado-MasochismTurning the Earth and the Strike Support Oratorium free of charge to the broadest of all possible audiences.

The theatre company developed new participatory techniques that enabled the audience to first rehearse with the company and then join them on stage as fellow performers. The Clinton Street theater was the company’s first permanent home since the closing of The Living Theatre on Third Street at Avenue C in 1993. The decision to return to the Lower East Side reflects the company’s continuing faith in the neighborhood as a vibrant center where the needs of some of the city’s poorer people confront the ideas of the experimenters in art and politics from the neighborhood and those who have newly settled in the area. When space closed in Spring 2013, the Living Theatre began a nomadic lifestyle once more, finding a home at the Lower East Side’s Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Centre. The last production, under Judith’s direction, No Place to Hide, played to sold-out audiences in a workshop-style production in March 2014. Judith Malina passed away in 2015 but her spirit lives on with her tremendous legacy and body of work.

The Living Company has since toured across the United States in 2016 with the Know Your Rites Tour, performing a reprise of Seven Meditations on Political Sado-Masochism and street happenings at sites of injustice across the country. They have also toured through Europe devising performances with immigrant and refugee communities and most recently in Brazil with a new performance created by the company, Electric Awakening, and at the Mexican border. The Living Theatre lives on!
